Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy is a condition in which the fertilized egg develops in an area outside the uterus. It is a rare event that occurs in 1 in every 50 pregnant women. In women, the process from fertilization to birth proceeds in certain steps. First of all, the fertilized egg attaches to the endometrium layer in the uterus, settles there and begins its development. If the fertilized egg settles and develops somewhere other than the endometrium layer, this is considered an ectopic pregnancy and poses a life-threatening risk for the mother since it is not a normal and healthy pregnancy. A pregnancy that continues as an ectopic pregnancy is not healthy and cannot continue normally. The fertilized egg cannot survive and the growing structure may destroy various maternal structures. The sooner an ectopic pregnancy is treated, the healthier other pregnancies will be.
SYMPTOMS OF ECTOPIC PREGNANCY
Ectopic pregnancy initially appears with symptoms such as lack of menstruation, breast tenderness, and nausea, just like a normal pregnancy. When a pregnancy test is performed, the result will be positive, but the pregnancy will not continue healthily.
Severe pain on one side of the abdomen, vaginal spotting and bleeding are the main symptoms of ectopic pregnancy. If the blood comes from the fallopian tubes, pain in the shoulders and difficulty in bowel movements may be felt. Symptoms such as stabbing-like sharp pains, weight loss, dizziness and fainting may also be observed.
HOW IS ECTOPIC PREGNANCY DIAGNOSED?
When you tell your Gynecologist about your complaints, one will probably perform a pelvic examination to find tenderness or a mass in your abdomen. Some ectopic pregnancies can be diagnosed this way. However, the actual diagnosis is made by examining whether the uterus contains a developing fetus through ultrasonographic examinations. Although measuring HCG levels is also important, lower than expected levels of HCG suggest ectopic pregnancy. The obstetrician may also check your progesterone levels, as low progesterone also suggest an ectopic pregnancy.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ETERNAL PREGNANCY?
Ectopic pregnancy can be seen in all women with an active sexual life. However, there are some factors that increase this risk. These are:
